A Favourable Recommendation? --- Last update - 10-20-2023 --- “ Maintain at least 50% …” Recommendations for Dorval’s new Sustainable Urban Plan have been submitted by BC2/Stantec. These recommendations were made public October 11, 2023 during a public information session held at Dorval’s Sarto Desnoyer Community Centre. The recommendation regarding the Garden Crescent, which is privately owned, calls for development of up to 50% of the available territory. With this in mind, should the city finalise it in the urban plan, common sense tells us the cottonwood trees in the crescent will be left alone and (perhaps) protected by resolution - it only reqires the will to do so. No detailed plan for development has to date been made public. We do have however information that the owner of the property has been in discussion with at least one city official. Going foreward GARDEN CRESCENT GREEN will monitor related developments as they become available while continuing to support and promote sustainable urban development in our community, so for the time being on-site demonstrations will be suspended indefinitely keeping in mind matters may change and when development of the crescent begins GCG will be watching closely. Our web site will serve as an information resource on related matters. Lastly GCG will be producing a position paper for submission to the city’s new public participation initiative. The paper will include several proposals for the creation of a public park in the crescent’s green area. We wish to acknowledge the devasating loss of 22 family homes in the Garden Crescent last September. The fire began just before 1:00 PM on a third story balcony when BBQ/hibachi coals fell onto a plywood balcony floor. By the time the fire department arrived the fire had spread into the roof and along to the adjacent, attached address. Despite no smoke detector warning was heard there were no serious injuries were reported. The potential of rebuilding the structures is yet to be determined.
